3. Travel Letter 4/8 2022

Thu/Aug/2022 By Kirsten Halmø

Dear Friends and Family

Now we are in A Coruña in northern Spain on the Costa del Muerte, the coast of death, uh uh. We have made it to Biscay and can now wear green trousers, says Susanne. It’s over 4000m deep out there in the Biscay. No wonder it has any effect on the waves. We had a tailwind most of the time and the waves with us, so it rolled quite a bit and when we had to sleep it happened with a toss from one side to the other side. Between 4 and 8 in the morning, you can easily sleep anyway. We were 2.5 days on the high seas so it surpassed quite quickly. On day 2, the unthinkable happened. I saw 2 blasts from whales blowing out air. I saw a huge grey back diving about 50 m from the boat and was aware that these were not cute little dolphins. I immediately thought of killer whales and called out to Jeppe who was taking an afternoon nap. Before we sailed, a Danish boat had its rudder destroyed by killer whales 80 nautical miles from Brest. When they started to reverse using the engine the killer whales disappeared. So we started the engine and reversed too. When we thought about it, we agreed that it was probably not killer whales I had seen, as they are black and have a high dorsal fin. Phew. We are in doubt about whether we can continue down the Spanish coast, which we prefer, or whether we should go directly to Madeira for a trip of 5-6 days

Along wind sailing towards A Coruna – nice to be in the coastal wind shadow with sunshine.

Unfortunately, Susanne cannot continue sailing with us. She tried to buy a plane ticket for Friday and asked Jeppe for help. They booked a ticket but for the wrong date 19/8, which she discovered a few hours later. So started rebooking which was very difficult. She managed to book a late flight so she has to spend the night at the airport in Barcelona. Quite a pity. She was in no mood for a concert in the town square with Dani Fernandez, Spain’s counter match to the danish singer Rasmus Seebach. Very entertaining, everyone sang along and danced. I sang Felix Navidad, and Mette was embarrassed, so I just clapped. Jeppe jumped around and whistled.

A Coruna a wonderful city.

Early next morning we had a new neighbour – an enormous cruise ship

I think this is the last time Mette goes to a concert with the oldies. Now you must all be well and especially father, who has been in bed for a few days. Good recovery, I hope the strength returns soon.

Best wishes
Kirsten
